General Information: One of the nation’s original land-grant universities, Kansas State University was established under the Morrill Act in 1863. The K-State student body is approximately 23,500 with an on-campus residence population of 4000. The 315-acre main campus is located in Manhattan, 125 miles west of Kansas City via Interstate 70. A community of 45,000 residents, Manhattan is nestled in the rolling Flint Hills of northern Kansas and within five miles of Tuttle Creek Reservoir, one of the largest in the Midwest.
The center of campus community life at KSU is the K-State Student Union. Since its opening in 1956, the K-State Student Union has served thousands of patrons daily. The original building and two subsequent additions were built entirely with funds collected through student fees. Today, the five-level, 270,000 square foot facility has a wide range of services, facilities, and programs to meet the various needs of the campus community. The Student Union currently provides a food court, a noon buffet, convenience store, meeting and banquet rooms, bookstore, computer store, theater, Union Program Council Office, recreation area, copy center, a bank and the Office of Student Activities and Services.
Statement of Purpose: Students selected for this position will be able to develop and refine skills related to management of a college union and student activities programming by working closely with professional staff and completing meaningful experiences which will complement and enhance their personal, academic and career goals. The position is designed to supplement the student’s academic program and to provide practical experience to better prepare the student for employment in student personnel professions.
Position Responsibilities: The position will focus on gaining knowledge and skills in the areas of business, reservations, and student activities.
Area Duties: Program Department – After Hours (event planning) – two semesters
Serves as advisor to and monitors the financial condition of After Hours budget.
Responds to inquiries related to activities and services.
Works to promote and encourage improved programming efforts.
Gains experience in agent and contract negotiation.
Works evenings and every Friday night to plan and execute the substance-free, alternative After Hours events (usually offering food, craft, movie, and main event).
Keeps good historical records, including but not limited to attendance numbers, evaluations of events, and co-sponsors.
Attend staff meetings, Union committee meetings, retreats, and weekly touch-base meetings.
Academic Programs: The Graduate School at Kansas State University requires a bachelor’s degree transcript with a 3.0 grade point average.
Position Appointment: Appointment will consist of a nine-month appointment from mid-August to mid-May, and may be renewable either in the Program Department or Building Operations for a second nine-month appointment for the same dates, contingent upon satisfactory performance. The incumbent may apply for student employment at regular student pay rates outside of the Graduate Advisor appointment dates.
Hours Per Week: Approximately 20 hours (some evening and weekend work required)
Salary: $13.50 per hour
Qualification and Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree — Required
Enrollment in the Graduate School of Kansas State University in Student Personnel — Desired
One-year experience in student life area with preference being the college union — Desired
Preference will be given to those interested in pursuing a career in the college union or activities field.
