Chick-fil-A: Mor Than Chikin’

The K-State Student Union Chick-fil-A has become far more than a place to grab a bite between classes. Under the leadership of Manager Steve Anderson, the restaurant has woven itself into the fabric of campus life and the surrounding community by creating and partnering with programs that focus on service and support.

At the end of each day, leftover cooked products are frozen in preparation to be donated through the “Chow Match” program at the Flint Hills Breadbasket. Each week, representatives from the food bank collect the frozen food and distribute it to the Cats’ Cupboard on campus. Since joining the program in June, the Union location has donated nearly 240 pounds of food; reducing waste and helping meet the nutritional needs of students.

Three times a year, the location also hosts a free-breakfast fundraiser to support student employees. Guests receive a breakfast meal in exchange for a donation and proceeds directly support the Jon L Levin Student Union Employee Award, allowing the franchise to invest back into the students who make the operation run. Since beginning in 2022, the breakfast has raised more than $7,000 to benefit student employees.

“I started working at Chick-fil-A my freshman year, and it’s allowed me to pay off my tuition without taking on any student debt. I haven’t had to touch my college savings, and that gives me a real head start in life without the worry of student loans,” commented Liana Becker, student team lead.

The team’s commitment to growth extends beyond its staff. Through the Project EXCELL program, offered by UFM, adults 18 and older with developmental disabilities attend Saturday morning classes on the Manhattan campus to learn life skills. The restaurant opens early to provide a welcoming environment where participants can practice social interaction, money management and in-person communication—real-world experiences that build independence and confidence.

Students value being part of a team led by Anderson, who has been supporting students at the Union for more than 15 years. “As a marketing technology major and team lead at Chick-fil-A, I love that working here not only helps me pay for tuition but is also convenient since it’s right on campus. The semester student employee award has been a huge help—covering textbooks and even the little things, like keeping me energized for classes while balancing work and school. Plus, I really enjoy working with Steve and the excellent management team,” commented student Miranda Jenne.

Campus groups benefit as well. The restaurant purchases “Be Our Guest” gift cards from Chick-fil-A’s national office and donates them to student organizations to support their fundraising efforts. In addition, campus departments and organizations enjoy a 15% discount on catering orders, making it easier to bring people together over a meal.

This blend of engagement, education and empowerment has transformed Chick-fil-A at the Union into a hub for community impact. It’s not just about chicken—it’s about creating opportunities and feeding both bodies and dreams.

The Union’s mission is to serve all, especially students, with facilities that provide services, programs, leadership experiences and educational opportunities which foster a sense of well-being, belonging and community.
