Summary of Position: The Assistant Finance Director/Business Management serves as the chief accounting officer for the Union, overseeing all financial accounting, reporting and compliance functions. The position is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the Union’s financial records, adherence to applicable laws and regulations and effective management of financial systems and internal controls. The Assistant Finance Director/Business Management provides leadership in developing financial policies, managing audits and supporting strategic planning through accurate financial information and analysis.

Status: Exempt, Full-time

Supervisory Responsibility: Yes

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one-hour meal break

Pay Range: $76,500-$84,150, based on education and experience

Supervised By:  Director/Human Resources and Business Management

Key Functions: 

• Develop and maintain the financial well-being of the Union by providing financial projections and accounting services.
• Develop financial strategies by contributing financial and accounting information, analysis, recommendations, as well as strategic thinking and direction to establish functional objectives in line with the Union’s mission.
• Establish financial operating strategies by evaluating trends, establishing critical measurements, accumulating resources, resolving problems and implementing change.
• Monitor financial performance by measuring and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions and minimizing the impact of variances.
• Direct and oversee the preparation of all financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, stakeholder reports and governmental agency reports.
• Compare sales and profit projections to budgeted and actual expenses; make or oversee necessary adjustments to future projections and budgets. Study long-range economic trends and projects trend impact on future growth.
• Advise and inform the Union Corporation Board, Union Governing Board and other stakeholders on issues related to the budget and financial status of the Union.
• Oversee regulatory compliance of accounting data and files.
• Ensure compliance with professional accounting standards, rules, regulations and laws by directing and facilitating the preparation and maintenance of required financial records and reporting.
• Review processing and provide analysis of expenditures, revenue receipts, bank reconciliations and related processing. Maintain and reconcile general ledger, month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing entries and processes.
• Monitor Union retail service commissions, utility billing and sales reports.
• Train and direct the daily workflow of business services employees.
• Ensure a system of effective internal controls. Ensure regular internal and external auditing of financial operations. Prepare requested audit materials and serve as auditor’s primary contact. Respond to audit findings and make recommended changes/adjustments. Report findings to stakeholders.

Qualification Requirements:

Education - Minimum 

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in business administration, accounting, finance or equivalent and seven or more years of demonstrated experience; or
• Master’s degree from an accredited institution in business administration, accounting, finance or equivalent and five or more years of demonstrated experience.

Education – Preferred 

• Certified Public Accountant credentialing.
• Master’s degree from an accredited institution in business administration, accounting, finance or equivalent.

Experience – Minimum Demonstrated
• Progressive mastery of financial and budgetary management.
• Solid GAAP and financial reporting technical skills.
• Forecasting and process improvement.
• Excellence in accounting related software applications, word processing, and spreadsheets.
• Ability to work cross-functionally and with a wide variety of projects and competing deadlines.
• Supervisory experience.

Experience – Preferred Demonstrated

• Five or more years of demonstrated excellence in QuickBooks accounting software.
• Two or more years of work experience in a university and/or student union environment.
• Two or more years of non-profit accounting experience.
• Ten or more years of progressive mastery of financial and budgetary management.

Skills and Abilities

Work in a general office environment. Remain seated/stand 75% of shift. Finger dexterity/movement for typing, picking up small objects and utilizing varying office equipment. Hearing for average or normal conversations and to receive information. Sight to view computer, documents and general office machinery. Verbal and written communication to present, convey and exchange information and ideas accurately and quickly. There are no hazardous or significantly unpleasant physical conditions.
