Summary: Responsible for serving as the first point of contact for students, staff, faculty, and visitors by providing exceptional customer service at the information desk. This position supports the daily operation of the Union by assisting guests, supporting meetings and events, promoting a safe and welcoming environment, and responding to building needs while representing the Union with professionalism.

Work Schedule: Not to exceed 30 hours/week when school is in session (eligible for 40 hours/week during school breaks). International students’ schedules cannot exceed 20 hours/week when school is in session.

Pay Rate: $13.75/hour

Key Functions: 

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors by providing exceptional customer service, wayfinding, and creating a welcoming environment at the Information Desk.
  • Maintain knowledge of Union policies, emergency procedures, customer service expectations, and operational practices.
  • Provide accurate information regarding Union services, programs, events, campus resources, and building policies.
  • Monitor public spaces and report facility concerns, maintenance needs, or safety hazards through appropriate reporting.
  • Assist with event operations, including room unlocking, wayfinding, event and technological support, and responding to customer needs during events.
  • Conduct routine walkthroughs of the facility to audit events/usage and promote a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all guests.
  • Respond to customer concerns, resolve issues independently when appropriate, and refer complex situations to a supervisor or appropriate resource.
  • Serve as a resource by connecting guests with appropriate campus departments, services, and community resources.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance of the Information Desk and surrounding public areas.
  • Utilize reservation software, communication tools, and other technology required to support daily operations.
  • Assist with lost-and-found procedures.
  • Open and close the building following prescribed procedures.
  • Support promotional activities to help communicate Union programs, services, and upcoming events to guests.
  • Accurately document incidents, customer concerns, and operational issues following established procedures.
  • Collaborate effectively with staff, campus partners, and event organizers to ensure high-quality customer experience.
  • Complete shift reports.
  • Participate in required training.
  • Perform other operational duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the Union.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Current enrollment at Kansas State University
    • Non-university student: Current enrollment in high school or an accredited college or university.
  • Enrolled in no fewer than six credit hours
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Organizational and time management skills

Skills and Abilities: 

Work is performed in a public building environment. Frequently remain seated or standing for extended periods, with the ability to alternate between sitting, standing, and walking throughout the shift. Ability to conduct facility rounds, assist guests, and support building operations and events. Occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, and climb stairs while performing assigned duties. Frequently use hands and fingers to operate computers, telephones, radios, and other office or operational equipment. Ability to read computer screens, printed materials, room diagrams, event schedules, and facility signage. Hearing and verbal communication to communicate in person, by telephone, and by two-way radio. Occasionally lift, carry, push, or move materials, equipment, or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. Work will include evenings, weekends, and special events based on operational needs. Work is performed in a climate-controlled environment with no hazardous or significantly unpleasant physical conditions.
