Position Title: Specialist

Department: Building Operations

Summary of Position: The K-State Student Union is looking for a dependable and detail-oriented Custodian to join our team! This position plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities include daily cleaning and sanitation of public spaces, restrooms, and event areas to support the Union’s high standards of cleanliness and customer service. If you take pride in your work and enjoy being part of a team that makes a difference, we’d love to hear from you!

2-Available Shift Options:

Option 1: Evening Shift

Monday through Friday
5:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Includes a 30-minute meal break
Eligible for a shift differential of $0.60 per hour

Option 2: Day Shift

Monday through Friday
6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Includes a 30-minute meal break

Position Details: Full-Time

Work Schedule: 2 shifts available

Pay range: $15.50/hour

Key Functions:

*Due to scheduling and workload demands, time percentages of key functions may change. The 6 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. shift focuses primarily on event-specific duties at 60% and janitorial-specific duties at 35%.

Janitorial-Specific
60%: Maintain clean and sanitary building space, offices, meeting rooms, bathrooms, common areas,
furnishings, equipment, building entrances, and exterior walkways. Clean and disinfect any incidents
involving bodily fluids in the facility following documented protocol. Follow all OSHA janitorial safety
standards. Operate/utilize multiple tools, electrically-powered and manual machines, cleaning
compounds, solvents, and chemicals. Ensure proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners,
solvents, chemicals, and similar products used in janitorial services. Respond and report safety violations
to supervisor. Address, report, and debrief on incidents involving the health, safety, and well-being of
patrons (e.g. damage to property, protests, patron injury/accident, theft or loss of property, potential for
violence, and the like). Perform regularly scheduled deep-cleaning of facility to include stripping and
waxing floors, cleaning furniture upholstery, shampooing carpets, etc.
Event-Specific
35%: Complete event set-ups* as indicated on the Daily Function and Setup List, through the Event
Management System (EMS), and ensure the needs of the customer are met in an effective and efficient
manner. (*Event set-up includes configuration of tables and chairs, podiums, linen placement, stage
sections, audio/visual equipment, and lighting.) Provide exceptional customer service. Maintain working
knowledge of capacities, capabilities, and equipment configurations of event rooms.
Departmental Operations
5%: Anticipate changing priorities and special building operations projects. Serve on both internal and
external committees. Perform other duties as assigned and instructed.

Qualification Requirements: 

Education – Minimum
• No educational requirement.
Education – Preferred
• High school diploma (or equivalent).
Experience – Minimum Demonstrated
• Ability to stay on task and work independently with minimal supervision;
• Competence in following verbal and written instructions.
Experience – Preferred Demonstrated
• Custodial/janitorial experience to include working with tools, electrically-powered and manual
machines, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals.
• Familiarity with public facilities sanitation.
• Working knowledge of OSHA janitorial safety standards, to include Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
 
Skills and Abilities: Ability to stand for extended periods of time and move throughout the building. Full range of physical motion (ie. bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, walk and reach overhead) to operate manual and electrically-powered cleaning equipment and manipulate furniture, to include tables, chairs, and stage sections. Sight and ability to read printed material with or without vision aids. Verbal and written
communication to present, convey and exchange information and ideas accurately and quickly. Physical
agility to lift, carry, and/or pull up to 50 pounds repeatedly. Ability to be exposed to strong odors, fumes,
dust, wetness, humidity, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, disease, pathogenic substances,
and toxic/poisonous agents. Availability to work special events, nights and/or weekends as needed.
